The habit of taking the contraceptive pill every day, without missing a dose, is necessary for the contraceptive method to work almost 100%. It is ideal to follow the rule of taking the medicine at a certain predetermined time; this can be in the morning or in the evening. Keep the pack with your personal hygiene items or, better still, carry it in your handbag – precisely so that you always have it with you and avoid missing a dose.

The standard time at which the effectiveness of a contraceptive starts to decrease – according to clinical studies – is 12 hours.

The efficacy decreases slightly if a woman forgets to take one contraceptive tablet, so the recommendation is to take two tablets the next day. On the other hand, the probability of ovulation is high and at the same time the effectiveness of the contraceptive is significantly reduced if two or more tablets are omitted. Extending the seven-day interval between packs, however, is the riskiest and is associated with the highest probability of contraceptive failure.

When the delay in taking the contraceptive is between 12 and 24 hours you should, depending on your menstrual cycle:

Abandon sexual activity for the next 7 days or use additional protection – e.g. a condom – if the missed pill occurred in the first week of the cycle.
If it is week 2, take the missed tablet and on the following days take the remaining tablets from the pack to ensure adequate protection.
If it is the third week, take the missed tablet, finish taking the remaining tablets from the pack, and then start taking tablets from a fresh pack without a one-week break.
