You walk into the kitchen and suddenly wonder why you went there in the first place. You spend several minutes looking for your glasses, only to realize they’ve been sitting on top of your head the whole time. You can’t remember an actor’s name, even though you clearly remember the movie they starred in. Situations like these happen to almost everyone and are usually completely normal. Even so, many people begin to wonder: “Is this normal, or should I be concerned?”

Memory problems are among the most common reasons people over the age of 50 seek neurological or psychiatric consultation. Interestingly, in the vast majority of cases, the cause is not Alzheimer’s disease. Much more often, memory difficulties result from chronic stress, lack of sleep, depression, exhaustion, or other medical conditions that can be effectively treated.
Memory does not work like a computer hard drive that stores every piece of information in exactly the same way. Before something can be remembered, the brain must first pay attention to it. If you put your keys down while replying to a text message and thinking about tomorrow’s meeting, there is a good chance you won’t remember where you left them a few moments later. Not because your memory failed, but because the information was never properly encoded in the first place.
This is one of the key differences between normal forgetfulness and diseases that cause memory impairment. A healthy person may temporarily forget a friend’s name but suddenly remember it a few minutes later. They may misplace their phone but easily find it by retracing their steps. They might forget to buy milk but, after being reminded, quickly return to their original plan for the day. These situations happen to everyone and may become slightly more common with age.
The situations that should raise concern are quite different. Imagine talking to a loved one and, fifteen minutes later, asking exactly the same question again because you have no recollection of already receiving the answer. Or imagine making tea, walking away from the counter, and then having no idea why the kettle is switched on. Some people repeatedly tell the same story several times during a single conversation without realizing they have already shared it. In these situations, the problem is not temporary absent-mindedness but an inability to retain new information.
Surprisingly, people developing Alzheimer’s disease are often less concerned about their memory in the early stages than healthy individuals. In many cases, it is a spouse, children, or close friends who first notice something is wrong. They observe that their loved one increasingly forgets recent events, repeatedly asks the same questions, or begins having difficulty organizing everyday activities. By contrast, people living with chronic stress or anxiety disorders often analyze every minor memory lapse and fear the worst, even though their memory is functioning normally.
This does not mean that memory problems should be ignored. Declining memory can be a symptom of many conditions that have nothing to do with dementia. An underactive thyroid, vitamin B12 deficiency, obstructive sleep apnea, excessive alcohol consumption, side effects of certain medications, or depression may all cause difficulties with concentration and remembering new information. The good news is that many of these causes can be successfully treated, and memory often improves once the underlying problem is addressed.
Sleep also plays a crucial role. During sleep, the brain organizes the information gathered throughout the day and consolidates memories. People who regularly sleep only five or six hours a night often feel that their memory has noticeably worsened. After several nights of good-quality sleep, many find that these problems almost completely disappear. It is no coincidence that sleep is considered one of memory’s greatest allies.
It is also important to know that normal brain aging affects the way we remember things. As we grow older, retrieving information may simply take longer. You may temporarily forget an actor’s name or the name of a town, only for it to suddenly come back to you a few minutes later. This is not a sign of disease but a normal part of the aging process.
Alzheimer’s disease is different. Its hallmark symptom is impaired short-term memory. A person with Alzheimer’s may vividly remember events from decades ago but struggle to remember what happened just a few minutes earlier. As the disease progresses, additional symptoms appear, including difficulty planning, finding the right words, orienting oneself in time and place, or performing tasks that once felt completely automatic.
Online memory tests claiming to detect Alzheimer’s disease within minutes are becoming increasingly popular. However, they should be interpreted with great caution. They may be interesting, but they cannot confirm or rule out the disease. Proper memory assessment always requires a conversation with the patient, a detailed medical history, a clinical examination, and, when appropriate, specialized neuropsychological testing as well as laboratory or brain imaging studies.
The most important warning sign is therefore not a single episode of forgetting where you left your wallet or keys. What matters far more is a gradual decline in memory that begins to interfere with everyday life or is noticed by those closest to you. If you increasingly forget recent conversations, struggle with familiar daily tasks, or your loved ones point out that you keep asking the same questions, it is worth consulting your primary care physician, a neurologist, or a psychiatrist.
Not every episode of forgetfulness is a sign of disease, and not every moment of absent-mindedness means dementia is developing. Much more often, memory worsens because of stress, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, or medical conditions that can be effectively treated. However, if memory problems gradually become more frequent and begin affecting your daily functioning, it is important not to delay seeking medical advice. Early assessment more often provides reassurance than bad news, and if a disease is indeed developing, it offers the best opportunity to begin treatment early and maintain independence for as long as possible.

Are there blood tests that can detect Alzheimer’s disease?
New blood biomarker tests for Alzheimer’s disease are currently being developed, but their availability remains limited. Diagnosis is still based primarily on symptoms, a medical evaluation, and, when necessary, specialized diagnostic tests.
Can crossword puzzles and memory training prevent dementia?
Keeping your mind active is beneficial for brain health, but it does not guarantee protection against Alzheimer’s disease. The greatest benefits come from combining intellectual stimulation with regular physical activity, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and effective management of chronic medical conditions.
Are women more likely than men to experience memory problems?
Women report memory concerns more frequently, particularly during menopause, when hormonal changes may affect concentration and memory. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to have risk factors for vascular cognitive impairment, such as high blood pressure, smoking, and cardiovascular disease. The risk of Alzheimer’s disease increases with age in both sexes, although it is diagnosed more often in women, partly because women tend to live longer on average.
Is Alzheimer’s disease hereditary?
In most cases, no. The risk may be slightly higher if a close relative has had the disease, but the vast majority of Alzheimer’s cases are not caused by straightforward inheritance. Age, lifestyle, and other health factors also play important roles in the development of the disease.
Does diabetes increase the risk of memory problems?
Yes. Poorly controlled diabetes over many years can increase the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. Maintaining good blood glucose control is therefore an important part of protecting long-term brain health.
