Have you defeated COVID-19? Give back the plasma!

Have you been sick with the coronavirus and have recovered? Donate your plasma and help others heal!

Your plasma contains antibodies that can help treat COVID-19 patients. Give them back at the nearest Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center. Save the health and life of another person!

We recommend prior direct telephone contact with the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center, because the details of collection are agreed individually with each donor. No additional tests performed individually by the donor are required. The necessary tests for donors are provided by the public blood service.

Plasma can be collected from people who:

  • meet the basic eligibility criteria for blood donors specified in the Regulation of the Minister of Health of September 11, 2017. on the conditions for collecting blood from candidates for blood donors and blood donors (Journal of Laws of 2017, item 1741). Link to the Regulation;
  • suffered from COVID-19 or asymptomatic infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus (confirmed by tests or an entry in the salon.gov.pl application), have been considered cured and feel healthy, i.e. at least 14 days have passed since the end of isolation.
    are aged 18-65;
  • in the case of a previous transfusion and in the case of women with a history of pregnancy, additional tests will be required, which will be performed by the Blood Donation and Treatment Centers.

How is plasma collected?

Plasma is collected by plasmapheresis. During plasmapheresis, blood is drawn, which is separated into plasma and other components, which are transferred back into the same vein. Plasma collection is painless, completely safe and takes 30 to 40 minutes. Not more than 750 ml of plasma is withdrawn at one time. If plasma collection by plasmapheresis is not possible, 450 ml of whole blood is collected, from which approximately 220-230 ml of plasma is obtained.

What happens to the plasma next?

The collected plasma is subjected to the pathogen reduction procedure, divided into doses of 100-250 ml and frozen. Depending on the amount of antibodies that neutralize the virus in the plasma, 200-400 ml of plasma are infused with COVID-19 patients.

How does plasma therapy work?

Antibodies contained in the plasma neutralizing the SARS-CoV-2 virus (which causes COVID-19) eliminate it from the body of a patient with active infection after transfusion. Patients are often unable to produce their own antibodies or produce them too slowly (disproportionate to the development of infection). The administration of ready-made antibodies significantly speeds up defense processes and allows you to fight the coronavirus more effectively. Convalescent plasma therapy has previously been used many times in the case of EBOLA virus, SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV), influenza A virus (H1N1) and avian influenza A virus (H5N1). This is one of the most effective treatments for viral infections.
